Routed & Carved Signs
Precision Sign & Awning can route, carve, or cut to any shape, your lettering or designs in an almost endless variety of substrates. If you have an idea, we can create it. If you need help formulating an idea, our designers (with years of experience in the sign industry) can help you create your signage. We use a 6 ft. x 10 ft. AXYZ Trident CNC Router for our carved and routed signs. We are on our third AXYZ Router and we feel it is the sign industries best router.
Carved Sign Materials
Carved Signs used to be produced using hard wood. In recent years, the advances in High Density Urethane (HDU) have made HDU the material of choice for carved signage. Unlike wood, HDU will never warp or splinter.
The material is impervious to weather; even before painting. Even the best paints will not hold up well on wood. As the wood weathers, the natural tendency to warp will create small cracks in the paint causing premature breakdown. In recent years, the declining costs of HDU (due to technological advances) have made using HDU less expensive than hardwood.
We will paint your HDU signage to your exact color specifications using Matthews Acrylic Polyurethane Paint; which we believe is the world’s best sign paint. Matthews’s catalyst paints have 100% fade resistance for 10 years; and we have some signs still going strong for over 20 years with no noticeable fading. This far exceeds the life of normal sign enamels and the costs are comparable.
We also clear coat all our HDU signs intended for outdoor use to provide additional scratch resistance as well as increased fade resistance. Unlike many of our competitors, we have chosen to invest in the technology to allow us to safely use oil based catalyst sign paints because we know that the water based sign paints do not weather well and they do not provide the durability our customers should expect from a quality sign.
Routed Signs refer to any type of signage that requires being cut to shape using our CNC Router. We can produce letters or designs of any size, shape, or thickness in a wide variety of substrates. We routinely produce routed signage on HDU, PVC, coroplast, sintra, trovicel, dibond, acrylic, alumacore, and aluminum. As with our carved signs, we use Matthews Acrylic Polyurethane Paint to paint all of the different materials and can match any custom color. We often create signs on our Canon Arizona Flatbed UV Printer and then rout the sign to shape using our AXYZ CNC Router.
Many of our Customers require aluminum routed letters to be welded as part of their project to achieve the look that they desire. Aluminum welding is somewhat of an art and we have some of the best artists in the sign business. If your job requires welding, our fabricators will get the job done right.
Carved and Routed Signs often require a lot of experience to do correctly. Most sign companies do these projects through a wholesaler and have the products shipped to them. We do these projects In-House at our Carnegie, PA production facility. Our team at Precision Sign & Awning has over 300 years of Sign Company experience and we would greatly appreciate the opportunity to serve you.
